Modern society is defined by tensions between individuality and conformity, progress and alienation, and the contradictions of a consumer-driven world. The flâneur emerges as a unique figure who navigates and critiques these complexities, offering a detached yet reflective perspective on modern life. By observing the commodified world through a critical lens, the flâneur exposes the paradoxes of modernity while providing insight into its contradictions. In Xi Xi’s poem Window Shopping, the flâneur narrates modern life under the influence of consumerism, serving both as an observer and a participant. Through fragmented, shifting spaces and fluid pronoun use, the poem visualizes the alienation of individuals in a materialistic society. The flâneur’s perspective functions as a reflective lens on the paradoxes of modern society. On one hand, modernity alienates individuals through commodification. On the other, it preserves traces of human value, as labor is embedded within the commodities. This essay examines how the flâneur’s identity as a detached yet reflective observer is constructed in Window Shopping. It explores how the poem’s fragmented narration, complex use of tone, diction, and allusion, and self-referential language reveal intricate ideas about consumerism and modernity.
